Sometime around 2016, a design manager at the LEGO Group started making calls. Craig Callum ran Speed Champions, the line of small licensed sports car sets, and he wanted them in a video game.
On the LEGO Group's own Bits N' Bricks podcast, he described himself as "the guy that sort of initiated the whole conversation." Three years later, on June 13, 2019, LEGO Speed Champions arrived in Forza Horizon 4 for $19.99.
Playground spent six to seven months building it, the longest the studio had ever put into a single piece of DLC.
The result was Brickchester, Falcon Speedway, a house you assembled as you progressed, and cars including a McLaren Senna, a Ferrari F40 Competizione and a 1967 Mini Cooper S Rally, all rendered in plastic using the same approach Animal Logic took on The LEGO Movie.
Neither company has ever said how long the agreement behind it was supposed to last.
The LEGO expansion came down six months before the game it lived in
On June 25, 2024, Playground announced that Forza Horizon 4 would leave the Microsoft Store and Steam on December 15 that year.
The reason given was that the game was being delisted "due to licensing and agreements with our partners." What went unremarked in most coverage was the timing inside the announcement.
Every piece of Forza Horizon 4 DLC, LEGO Speed Champions and Fortune Island included, came off sale that same day in June.
For the six months that followed, you could still buy the game. The only route into LEGO Valley was an edition that already bundled it.
Owners lost nothing. Downloads still work, online play still works, and physical copies bought after the cutoff still connect to servers that remain live today.
Game Pass subscribers who had paid for DLC were sent a token for a free game, and those tokens started expiring this past June.
Hot Wheels ended on Forza Horizon 3's fourth birthday
The first of these crossovers had already been through the same process.
Hot Wheels launched in Forza Horizon 3 on May 9, 2017, at $19.99, adding six islands off the Australian coast tied together with orange track.
Xbox Wire promised ten new cars, including a barn find, with the Twin Mill, the Bone Shaker and the Rip Rod carrying the marketing.
Playground gave warning on August 11, 2020 that the game was approaching what it called End of Life. The date it landed on was September 27, 2020, four years to the day after Forza Horizon 3 was released.
Base game and DLC left together, so Hot Wheels and Blizzard Mountain vanished from the store in the same moment, with no way to buy either afterward. No license was named in the announcement.
The servers proved more durable than the store page. Players found online features greyed out in late 2024, and a Playground community manager confirmed on Reddit in January 2025 that the team had rebooted them.
A delisted 2016 racing game is still online in 2026.
Microsoft has never once said how long a Forza license runs
Four years is the number everyone repeats, and it comes from counting rather than from any statement. Forza Motorsport 6 went on September 15, 2019, four years after launch.
Forza Motorsport 7 went on September 15, 2021, just under four years. Forza Horizon 4 lasted more than six years, which spawned a second theory that Game Pass inclusion bought it extra time. That one lives on forums and nowhere else.
The official version arrived in a reply from the Forza Motorsport account on July 29, 2021, which said the games have to go unlisted after several years because third-party licenses covering real cars, tracks, and other elements begin to expire.
Nobody has ever been more specific than that. Turn 10's Dan Greenawalt told IGN in 2023 that the studio wanted licensing it could tend continuously rather than renegotiate in blocks, while noting Forza carries over a thousand of them.
A single number was never going to cover that pile.
Forza Horizon 5's Hot Wheels park went somewhere it was never sold before
Then there is the one that did not die. Hot Wheels returned in Forza Horizon 5 on July 19, 2022, again at $19.99, with 131 miles of track, ten cars, and more than 80 stunt pieces that snapped into EventLab.
It is still on Steam at full price this month, and still listed on the Microsoft Store. It also did something its predecessors never managed.
When Forza Horizon 5 reached PlayStation 5 on April 29, 2025, Turn 10 confirmed that the previously released car packs along with the Hot Wheels and Rally Adventure expansions would be purchasable there too.
A licensed Mattel expansion from 2022 was cleared for a console it had never been sold on, three years after release. Whatever those contracts say, they stretched.
The brands kept working while Playground's versions came down
Hot Wheels never left gaming. Milestone shipped Hot Wheels Unleashed on September 30, 2021, and Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 on October 19, 2023, and both remain on sale while the Forza Horizon 3 park sits behind a wall.
Mattel was licensing the brand out the whole time. LEGO's own racing game ran a tighter clock than anything Playground signed.
LEGO 2K Drive released on May 19, 2023, and was delisted on May 19, 2026, to the exact day, with multiplayer servers scheduled to close on May 31, 2027.
No reason was published, though a roster stacked with real licensed cars narrows the options.
What ran out in Forza's case was a particular bundle of permissions attached to a particular build, and the brands walked away fine.
The first time you drive into LEGO Valley, the brick gate opens and the whole world clatters into place around you, every hill and barn and billboard assembling itself in studs.
That is still on my hard drive, and it stays there as long as the install survives. It is just that nobody new is getting in.
