The Crew Motorfest RC Frenzy DLC is on the horizon, arriving on the island on May 9, and we had the opportunity to interview Gameplay Director Paul Narducci about his highly anticipated DLC.
In this interview, Paul Narducci explains everything about the DLC, talks about the biggest challenges the team faced in development, what players should look out for, and the importance of the DLC in the context of Season 9.
Without further ado, let's dive into the interview with Gameplay Director Paul Narducci.
The RC experience is built on a brand-new handling system that includes jumping, flipping, and even driving on water. How difficult was it to implement these 'pocket-sized' physics into the game?
Paul Narducci: It was a real challenge, honestly! The RC handling system was built entirely from scratch; we didn't use anything from an existing vehicle in the game. We had to create something that felt high-tech, toy-like, and fun, while still being responsive and satisfying to control.
Balancing that "pocket-sized" physics was tricky: we wanted players to feel the playfulness of an RC car without it becoming frustrating or unpredictable. Jumps, flips, and driving on water, each of those mechanics brought its own set of new challenges to solve.
Even the camera required its own solution, we ended up placing it in a new position, right between the two standard camera angles we typically use, to best capture that small-scale perspective.
But beyond the technical side, what really excited us was realizing that this was a brand new way for players to discover our world, and that made every challenge worth tackling.
Year 3 turns rooftops and vents into racetracks. How did the team approach 'micro-detailing' the existing environments to ensure they were fun to navigate at such a small scale?
Paul Narducci: Of course, some areas were specifically created and dedicated to the RC experience, like what you'll find in the RC Frenzy playlist. But what surprised us the most was how much of the existing world was already perfect for it
Small rivers, passages between houses, backyards, hidden alleys, they were all already there, just waiting to be. When you're driving your hypercar at over 400 km/h, you simply don't notice that level of detail. It just flies by. But with an RC, suddenly all that comes to life.
That's one of the things we're most proud of: the RC cars offer a completely new way to discover and enjoy a world that players might think they already perfectly know.
What led to the implementation of the top-down view events?
Paul Narducci: It came directly from my childhood! During testing, we tried locking the camera above a race just to see what would happen, and it just worked.
It immediately gave off those old-school vibes, like a vintage RC racing game from back in the day. Of course, we improved the recipe and fine-tuned it, but the feeling was so unique and nostalgic that we knew we had to keep it.
It turned into one of those moments where the team just looked at each other and said, "Okay, this is something special."
It's a pure vintage experience, and it brings a kind of challenge that feels both familiar and completely fresh at the same time

How would you describe the experience of racing in these top-down events, and what makes them so unique?
Paul Narducci: Like the rest of the RC experience, it's pure fun. But it's also challenging in a way that keeps you hooked.
You must anticipate corners and overtake differently; the perspective completely changes how you read the race. And once you start mastering it, it becomes hard to stop playing it.
It has this addictive quality that sneaks up on you; it feels like something different within an already different experience.
From the 10 events the RC FRENZY playlist introduces, which one do you think the community will enjoy the most, and why?
Paul Narducci: From the 10 events the RC FRENZY playlist introduces, which one do you think the community will enjoy the most, and why?
But personally, if I had to pick the event that best represents what the RC fantasy is all about, it would be Trickshot Hood.
It really showcases the full potential of the RCs: high-speed runs through the suburbs, slalom sections, finding your own paths, and squeezing under obstacles. It captures everything we dreamed of when we started working on this.
For me, that event is the most representative of what makes the RC experience special.
What were the main challenges you faced when creating these events?
Paul Narducci: Adapting the existing world to this new scale was one of them, making sure the environment felt right and purposeful at RC size. But beyond the technical side, the real shared challenge across all the teams was making sure the events were fun.
We didn't want events that were frustratingly difficult or repetitive to be challenging enough to engage players, but never to the point of blocking or boring them.
Fun was the main objective, and keeping that focus across all the different teams working on the experience was both a challenge and a great creative alignment.
Do you think the RC Experience can attract new players to the game, and if so, why?
Paul Narducci: We really hope so! We're incredibly proud of what we've achieved here. After three years of live service, adding the RC experience feels like dropping a new game within the game.
And we have a lot more surprises in store with the RCs, so we truly hope that both our existing players and new ones will see it as a fresh, surprising, and fun entry point into the franchise.
It brings a different energy that could resonate with people who maybe haven't found their way into The Crew Motorfest yet.

Apart from the size, what are the main differences between the RC Frenzy and the traditional racing experience?
Paul Narducci: Everything under the hood is different. We have crafted a brand-new suspension and chassis system, new grip behavior, and a completely new handling model.
On top of that, you have mechanics that simply don't exist anywhere else in the game: jumps, flips, and the ability to drive on water.
It's a distinct experience, not just a smaller version of what already exists, but something built with its own identity and feel.
Who would you say the RC Frenzy experience is made for? What types of players will truly love this new way of racing?
Paul Narducci: It's made for everyone who loves motorized experiences, but honestly, I think it taps into something even broader than that. We all have a story with RC cars, whether it's from video games, real life, or cartoons we watched as kids. That nostalgia is universal
This experience lets players reconnect with that feeling while exploring one of the biggest open worlds in racing games at high speed, on the ground, on water, and jumping over traffic.
It's that childhood fantasy, fully realized. I think that's something that can speak to a very wide audience.
How important is it for The Crew Motorfest to continue to innovate and introduce exciting new features?
Paul Narducci: It's key for us. We learned that with the live of The Crew 2: renewing the experience keeps players engaged and gives them new reasons to come back and discover the game differently, and excites and motivates our teams here at the studio.
With TCM, our approach is the same: it's not just about adding more vehicles or more tracks, it's about crafting new experiences. How can we help players enjoy motorized vehicles in ways they haven't before, in an ever-growing open world, solo or with friends?
From launch and for the future, we'll keep bringing that spirit through playlists, open world, and dedicated event weeks like we've done with the Summit Contests for years. And trust me, we already have plenty of surprises in the pipeline. You really can't imagine what we're working on right now.

Season 9 of The Crew Motorfest introduces a lot of new features and improvements to the game. So, where would you say the RC Frenzy experience ranks in terms of importance for Season 9 content?
Paul Narducci: You're right that Season 9 is already packed. NASCAR brought an incredible way to discover and enjoy a new fantasy, rooted in real teams, real brands, real pilots, and a very serious motorsport culture.
I'd say the RCs carry the same level of importance, because they also introduce a brand-new vehicle category with its own handling system, a new pillar of car culture to access and enjoy.
But where NASCAR was serious and authentic, we wanted the RCs to bring something different to the season and the game: something more explosive, more playful, more fun. The two complement each other well, and together they make Season 9 feel like a complete experience.
What can players expect when they try out the RC Frenzy playlist?
Paul Narducci: Ten brand new events, new rewards, and a whole new fantasy to discover and enjoy. And I'm sure players are going to love weaving through traffic, jumping over it, or finding their own creative lines in this chaos!
RC Frenzy playlist will be available on May 6th throughout the Year Pass, but we also wanted to make sure all players have a taste of it, so two other RC cars will be available throughout the season as rewards, either through the mainstage progression or Summit Contest rewards.
We really wanted everyone to get a chance to experience this.
