  • Primary Subject: BeamNG.drive (Version 0.39)
  • Key Update: Version 0.39 overhaul adds a gravel rally mode with pacenotes, improved lighting graphics, inter-vehicle aerodynamics, and the Cherrier Ardente coupe.
  • Status: Confirmed
  • Last Verified: August 3, 2026
  • Quick Answer: BeamNG.drive Version 0.39 introduces a thirty-kilometer Utah rally loop, overhauled lighting, realistic inter-vehicle aerodynamics, and a new Cherrier Ardente sports vehicle.

BeamNG.drive's 0.39 update went live on July 29, 2026, and developer BeamNG is calling it the biggest patch the studio has ever shipped.

After nearly eight months of quiet following v0.38 in December, that framing is hard to argue with.

"Long Time, Now See" rebuilds the game's lighting pipeline and adds a 30km gravel rally loop with professionally written pacenotes.

There's also a new sports coupe and a physics system that simulates airflow between vehicles.

Two hotfixes arrived within 48 hours of launch, which tells you plenty about the scale of what went out the door.

The Graphics Work Is Real, With One Big Gap

The shadow system took the biggest swing. Shadows no longer detach or float while the camera moves, cascade blending is smoother, VR shadows finally align across both eyes, and sun flicker is largely gone.

BeamNG also moved to a physically correct inverse-square attenuation model for lights and added HDR output on the Vulkan and Direct3D 12 renderers.

The sky is where 0.39 shows off. Volumetric clouds are in, running alongside a multiple-scattering sky model and dynamic ambient lighting driven by spherical harmonics.

The night sky is now built on real astronomical values, with Milky Way rendering and a constellation database that syncs to your latitude, longitude, date, and time.

West Coast, USA has been rebuilt with PBR materials and given proper night lighting, while foliage across every map picked up leaf translucency and 3D grass.

Headlight and fog light projection patterns now vary by market and bulb technology, so a sealed beam and an LED unit throw light differently.

The obvious hole is upscaling. There is still no DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or temporal anti-aliasing, leaving FXAA and SMAA as your only options and shimmering as a persistent annoyance after years of requests.

BeamNG has at least been upfront that the visual jump costs performance, telling players not to hesitate before dropping presets.

Rally Utah 2026 Is the Best Thing in the Patch

The new NGRC Rally Utah 2026 loop packs four gravel special stages totaling 16.4km into a 30km route. The rest is liaison, meaning you drive between stages under your own power, in traffic, with a clock running.

Pacenotes are the centerpiece. BeamNG brought in Alex Kihurani, who co-drove Chris Ingram to the 2024 British Rally Championship title in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, to write and voice the Pro set.

Below that sits an Enthusiast style with close to 200 unique calls and a new Casual option that simplifies everything down to easy, medium, and hard corner warnings.

You can pick your co-driver, chase gold, silver, and bronze star times, and race an experimental offline leaderboard called Virtual Competitors.

The penalty system has been softened so a spin no longer ruins a run, and a Rally Editor for building your own stages ships.

Worth saying plainly: this is the most interesting rally implementation to arrive in any game in a while.

The liaison sections and the stage start procedure are what stand out, because almost nobody else bothers to simulate the space between stages.

Dirt Rally and its peers hand you a stage, take it away, then hand you another.

BeamNG models the drive to the start line and the wait at it, which lands much closer to an actual rally weekend. Other developers should be taking notes.

A New Coupe and Air That Finally Moves

The Cherrier Ardente joins the roster as a 2+2 sports coupe on the FCV platform with 19 factory and custom configurations.

Circuit Race, Trackday, Gravel Rally, and Asphalt Rally builds are included, with both combustion and electric powertrains available.

More significant is the new inter-vehicle aerodynamics system. Moving cars now disturb the air around nearby cars, which brings slipstreaming, bump drafting, and side drafting into a game that previously ignored all three.

It works on props too, so a truck passing at speed can knock over a flagpole without ever touching it.

The UI Rewrite Has Split Players

The pause menu was redesigned from scratch, largely to fix gamepad navigation that BeamNG itself described as anywhere from annoying to impossible.

A new vehicle tab handles every spawned car in bulk, UI apps are now HUD apps with a proper layout editor, and the options menu was ported to Vue with live-apply graphics settings.

Reaction has been mixed. A vocal group of players find the new menus less intuitive with mouse and keyboard and read the layout as built around a controller first.

Some are drawing comparisons to the divisive 0.24 UI change.

Record Numbers, Rough Edges

Update 0.39 drove BeamNG.drive to a new all-time Steam concurrent player record, comfortably past the previous 38,775 peak set on Christmas Day 2025.

Frame rate complaints followed just as quickly, including from players on capable hardware, though that evidence is anecdotal rather than benchmarked.

BeamNG shipped 0.39.1 on July 30 and 0.39.2 on July 31, conceding that an unusually large update had produced an unusually large pile of issues.

Elsewhere, career mode is still in Early Preview but gains new profile creation and multiple manual saves, and over 50 achievements have been added retroactively.

The PlayStation 5 port announced in May is still slated for later this year without a firm date, and the 0.39 UI and optimization work looks like groundwork for it.

Official multiplayer is in development but won't be ready for a while, so BeamMP stays the online route.
